What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture originated in China about three thousand years ago. It spread throughout the Far East before moving to the West. It is the oldest continuously practiced medical system in the world.
 Acupuncture has long been recognized as one of the safest, most comprehensive systems of medicine today. According to Chinese medicine, universal laws of nature govern the human body, as well as the world around us.
As in nature, health in the individual is determined by a smooth flow of vital energy throughout the body. This energy is called "Chi" or "Qi" and circulates in our bodies along pathways called meridians. These meridians traverse and nourish the body just as rivers traverse and nourish the earth. In nature, rivers can overflow, dry up, or become dammed or poluted, all metaphors for what can happen to the vital energy in our bodies. When this happens, the body may display distress in the form of symptoms.
What does acupuncture do?
The aim of acupuncture is to establish a smooth flow of Qi throughout the body. The process is encouraged by the insertion of needles into specific points along various meridians of the body. Some people feel relaxed by a treatment, while others are energized.
What about the needles?
Acupunture needles are not much thicker than a human hair. They are made of pre-sterilized, high quality stainless steel. They are single-use needles and are safely disposed of after use. Typical insertions penetrate only slightly below the skin's surface. Sensations vary among individuals. Some people feel a pinch or tingling sensation; others feel nothing at all.
What should I expect during a treatment?
During the first visit, the acupuncturist will gather information about your health and lifestyle, and will conduct a physical exam. Subsequent visits will involve acupuncture treatments to address your specific goals and concerns. The frequency and duration of treatments vary by individual.
Prior to your acupuncture treatment, it is advised that you refrain from using heavily scented products, that you avoid drinking coffee or eating a very large meal, or coming to your treatment with an empty stomach.
Who benefits from acupuncture treatment?
People with acute or chronic conditions such as: allergies, asthma, migraines, neuralgia, insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronique fatique, arthritis, digestive disorders, hormonal irregularities (including menstrual problems, PMS, infertility), and a variety of chemical sensitivities.
Acupuncture may also help relieve anxiety, stress, depression or addiction, and can also be used as preventative medicine by strenghthening the body's immune system.
